Parliament to hear from people injured in accidents

The voice of people injured in accidents will finally be heard after the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) has announced plans to host a reception in the House of Commons next month.

According to the Law Society accidents cause injuries to more than three million people every year, often a party is at fault, so the injured person has a right to compensation.

The APIL reception will discuss personal injury law from the perspective of injured people not from the viewpoint of insurance companies or legal representatives.

APIL said: “The event is an opportunity to talk to MPs and peers across Parliament about the issues that really matter to injured people and creates a platform from where APIL can build on our agenda. The event will also be attended by journalists.

“Many parliamentarians have confirmed that they plan to attend the event, at which the Association will launch a new publication called Reality Check. The booklet sets the record straight on popular headlines and puts personal injury firmly in the context of people, rather than insurer profits or public budgets.

“APIL executive committee members and staff in attendance will also talk about the fall in damages since the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act (LASPO), and how we should be treating vulnerable injured people in our society.

“Since changes to LASPO were made there have been reported increases in the number of unrepresented litigants in person.

“During the past year, the Government has been conducting a post-implementation review (PIR) to assess the impact of Part 1 of LASPO against its original objectives.”
